Located on the Tuscan coast of Versilia, Forte dei Marmi is one of Italy’s most prestigious seaside destinations. Known for its wide sandy beaches, refined atmosphere and timeless elegance, it has long been synonymous with privacy, style and understated luxury.
Its name originates from the Fortino, the small fortress built at the end of the 18th century during the rule of Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo of Tuscany. The history of the town is closely linked to the precious white marble of the nearby Apuan Alps, which was transported from the mountains towards the sea before being shipped to destinations throughout Italy and beyond.
Forte dei Marmi began attracting wealthy families, artists and intellectuals as a seaside retreat well over a century ago. During the 20th century, its villas surrounded by pine trees, elegant beach establishments and relaxed way of life established it as one of the most iconic resorts on the Mediterranean.
A typical summer day often begins by bicycle, perhaps with breakfast in one of the cafés and pastry shops in the centre, before heading to the beach. Forte dei Marmi’s historic beach-club culture remains one of its defining features, combining traditional cabanas and large beach tents with discreet service, restaurants and elegant contemporary facilities. Among the best-known establishments are Alpemare and Bagno Annetta.
In the late afternoon, life moves back towards the centre. Aperitifs, elegant restaurants and evenings spent strolling through the pedestrian streets are part of the rhythm of Forte dei Marmi, alongside boutiques from some of the world’s leading fashion houses.
Culture and art also play an important role in the life of the Versilia coast. Nearby Pietrasanta, long associated with international artists and sculptors, hosts galleries, exhibitions and cultural events, while the celebrated Festival La Versiliana brings theatre, music and cultural encounters to its historic pinewood every summer.
Nightlife ranges from sophisticated bars and restaurants to some of the most famous clubs on the Versilia coast. Nearby Twiga and Seven Apples remain among the area’s best-known destinations, while the legendary La Capannina di Franceschi, founded in 1929 and one of the symbols of Forte dei Marmi’s social history, is currently being renovated ahead of its planned reopening in 2027.
Forte dei Marmi combines the elegance of an international resort with a distinctly Tuscan way of life: mornings by the sea, bicycles beneath the pine trees, long lunches, art, shopping and evenings enjoyed at an unhurried pace.
SURROUNDINGS
Forte dei Marmi is ideally positioned for discovering some of the most fascinating destinations in northern Tuscany and along the nearby Ligurian coast.
Just a few kilometres away lies Pietrasanta, often known as the “Little Athens” for its long association with art and sculpture. Its historic centre is filled with galleries, artists’ studios, restaurants and cafés, creating a lively atmosphere throughout the year.
Behind the coast rise the dramatic Apuan Alps, whose white marble has shaped the history and landscape of the region for centuries. The marble quarries around Carrara and Monte Altissimo offer a striking contrast between the Mediterranean coastline and the rugged mountains just beyond it. Michelangelo himself travelled to this area in search of marble for his works.
Lucca, surrounded by its perfectly preserved Renaissance walls, is ideal for a day of art, architecture and cycling, while Pisa, with its celebrated Piazza dei Miracoli and Leaning Tower, is also within easy reach.
Further along the coast, the Cinque Terre offer a completely different landscape, with five historic villages perched between steep hills and the Ligurian Sea, making them an ideal destination for a day trip by boat or train.
Florence, cradle of the Renaissance, can also be reached for a day dedicated to art and history, from the Duomo and the Uffizi Gallery to Ponte Vecchio.
With the sea on one side and the Apuan Alps on the other, Forte dei Marmi offers an exceptional base from which to experience beaches, art, historic towns, nature and the distinctive lifestyle of northern Tuscany.
Questa per me è più raffinata e più credibile della tua originale, senza perdere nulla dell’idea di Forte.
