Just a few kilometres away lies Pietrasanta, often known as the “Little Athens” for its long association with art and sculpture. Its historic centre is filled with galleries, artists’ studios, restaurants and cafés, creating a lively atmosphere throughout the year.
Behind the coast rise the dramatic Apuan Alps, whose white marble has shaped the history and landscape of the region for centuries. The marble quarries around Carrara and Monte Altissimo offer a striking contrast between the Mediterranean coastline and the rugged mountains just beyond it. Michelangelo himself travelled to this area in search of marble for his works.

Lucca, surrounded by its perfectly preserved Renaissance walls, is ideal for a day of art, architecture and cycling, while Pisa, with its celebrated Piazza dei Miracoli and Leaning Tower, is also within easy reach.
Further along the coast, the Cinque Terre offer a completely different landscape, with five historic villages perched between steep hills and the Ligurian Sea, making them an ideal destination for a day trip by boat or train.

Florence, cradle of the Renaissance, can also be reached for a day dedicated to art and history, from the Duomo and the Uffizi Gallery to Ponte Vecchio.
